RE: CG suggestions for Charlottesville, VA area?

I think Misty Mountain Campground is not too far from there. I'm more familiar with campgrounds in Shenandoah & along the BRP than I am on that side of the ridge...

RE: US 113 Thru Delaware and Maryland ?

Being a Mass native that has lived in the Norfolk area for the last 30 years I can tell how things have changed on that run down through the DelMarVa... For starters, they have farily new Toll road in place that will run you from I95 just south of Wilmington, it is Rt-1. You can also get on US-13 in Wilmington and use that too, and it meets up with Rt-1 at the St. Georges Bridge. However, the new toll road is much much faster. The new Rt-1 Toll road will take you all the way to Dover, and dump you out on US-113 right there beside Dover AFB and the Raceway. I highly recommend you continue south on US-113 from that point down to Georgetown De, where you cross over on Rt-9 over to Rt-13 south. You miss Dover, and most of the little towns. Rt-9 joins up with US-13 just north of the Maryland state line in Laurel De... Just south of the De/MD state line you run into the by-pass for Salisbury, and shoot right around the city, takes about 45 minutes to drive from De line through MD to the Va state line... Unfortunately there are still numerous small towns to slow you down, but the two worst area's (Dover & Salisbury) have been bypassed with limited access hiways!

RE: Am I a full timer?

Well, I'm a full timer! And I've only moved 3 times in the last 4 years, and have gone from a TT to a Class-A Bus Conversion in the last 6 months! You don't have to be on the road to full time in an RV, and you don't have to be on the road to 'experience the challenges' of living this life style.

RE: ocean view/ front rv parks?

I'll also recommend Ocean Waves Campground located in Waves NC (Cape Hatteras National Seashore), small, friendly, famliy operated with full hook-up's...direct access to the beach!

RE: Dreaded 'F' word

What difference a bunch of miles makes huh? We'll probably be in the 80's to 90's around here for another month at least, leaves won't start to turn until late October and will still have colorful leaves the beginning of December!! Our "W" starts in January and ends in late Feb or early March usually! If we're real lucky we might even get a dusting of snow during that time. And here I spend the summers crabbing at anyone who will listen that I want to spend next summer in Alaska!! (I say that every summer) :B

RE: NE USA Adventure

I think with the price of RV rentals it might still be cheaper to haul your RV over, even at $4.00 gas prices! RV Rentals are not cheap by any means, and after you pay the rental and insurance fee's you still have to pay for the fuel. JHMO... September is nice, but the best time would be first week in October, that is when the fall folliage is at or near peak!!

RE: Oceanfront/Bayfront campgrounds in VA...

Ummm, Bethpage and Greyspoint are bayfront, though I think you would be better off with 1st Landing or Kiptopeke...

RE: Outer Banks, NC

If you don't want to spend a small fortune on nightly camping fee's and still have ALL the amenities, then try Ocean Waves Campground about a half mile south of Camp-H and a quarter mile south of KOA, and Ocean Waves costs HALF what the other two charge. Reservations are hard to get, this place stays booked so call soon to see what they have open!!

RE: New York City???

The OP said they were heading west, I don't think Maine or Vermont are west of Long Island?! Travel across LI real early in the morning BEFORE rush hour, have the city well behind you by 7am...

RE: Full Timing and Health Insurance

If you are a US Military Veteran you are eligile for medical care, it is based soley on active duty service. You can read it for yourself at the va medical eligibility webpage, and Health Care eligibility is not just for those who served in combat! I served in the Navy from 75-79, never saw combat, no combat in those years. I have a VA Medical card and have used them in the past when I was between insurance coverage. About all you will need is a copy of your DD-214 to enroll...

RE: Compensation

There is no right or wrong answer here, differnt places handle it differently. However, the above sounds fairly acceptable. Some places pay for all hours worked but offer less freebies. It's all in a matter of what the workamper needs, wants, and desires...as well as what the employer is willing to dish out. That 100lbs of propane per month is a very good benny, priced propane lately?? Keep in mind not everyone wants to be paid, retired folks between 62 and 65 can only earn a limited amount of money before they start loosing retirement money...so many will work for amenities and forego the pay.

RE: Satellite Finder Meter Driving Me Nuts!

Wow, and I thought I had it rough with setting my direct-tv dish using nothing but a compass and the tv's meter!! Takes me about 3-5 minutes every time!!

RE: Any interest in workamping in Bar Harbor, Maine?

If you were to hire summer help, require them to work 20 hours per week and pay them minimum wage it would cost you $580...plus workmans comp insurance. I think a months electric bill for an RV would be far cheaper than that! I rent a site that includes water sewer & electric for $440 per month, so the electric can't be that expensive. Oh, and you will have a very hard time filling this position if you have the worker pay his own electric bill, unless of course you are paying them hourly wages so they can pay the electric bill. Remember, if you want good help you will have to make the position at least somewhat attractive to them. And in answer to the question of where to post the job listing, I don't think you need to look any further, you'll find plenty of applicants right here in the Workamping section.

RE: Short Term Storage of RV

A lot of RV parks offer RV storage for a small fee. Chesapeake Campground (Virginia) charges $30 per month for storage inside the campground, which is at least gate controlled. I stored mine there for several months...

RE: Takeout and outdoor dining in and around Wells, Maine

Not too sure how close to Wells this is, but it is not all that far. Just south of Portland is a place called Two Lights, there is also a Two Lights State Park off the same road. You follow that to the end of the road, and right there under the shadows of two light houses is a wonderful outdoor seafood place right on top of the beach. I highly recmommend the whole fried clams!!

RE: Full Timing in a Park RV?

The campground I just left from will not let any RV in there that is NOT equipped with Gray AND black tanks! They do inspect them on the way in too. I doubt too many RV parks will pay that much attention, but if one does it then I'd bet others do so also... Just FYI...

RE: Waterfront Camping, Maine to SC, close to Atlantic Coast

NC Outbanks, most notably Cape Hatteras National Seashore has several places that will fill the bill, I recommend Ocean Waves Campground as it cost about HALF what the others around it cost, nice little campground too!!

RE: First Landing State Park. Worth the trip?

I would suspect the HRT Trolley Buses stop outside the park, you could probably take them to and from the resort strip/boardwalk, and there is a whole lot to do there! You could call the park and ask, I'm sure they would know about the bus schedules...

RE: Federal Controls on RVing Through Tolls

Well, they keep trying to add toll's to the interstates here in South East Virginia, and the local populace keeps letting the elected officials know loud & clear we don't want it. Their last efforts to put this on us against our will was challenged in court and the people won. But it is only a matter of time until they get their way, they'll find a way to make it happen.
